That figure leaves out two things, though: Japan’s tourist tax refund and Thailand’s import duty, and each one turns the answer over.

Take Off Japan’s 10% Tourist Refund and All 6 Swing to the Japanese Side

Japanese website prices already include the 10% consumption tax, and foreign visitors can reclaim it on purchases of JPY 5,000 or more in the same store on the same day. Strip that out and the numbers look like this:

The clearest reversals are CHANEL and Dior, both cheaper in Thailand on a straight comparison and both back on the Japanese side once the refund lands. LOEWE widens from 14.5% to 22.2%, the largest gap on the list.

How Is the Refund Claimed in Japan, and What Changes This November?

Under the system running to 31 October 2026, the tax is either deducted at the till or refunded at the store’s tax-free counter. From 1 November 2026 Japan switches to pay first, refund later: shoppers always pay the tax-inclusive price in store, then apply on departure at a customs terminal or through Visit Japan Web in the departure lobby before check-in. Goods must be bought within 90 days of leaving, and the JPY 5,000 threshold is unchanged.

Declare It at a Thai Airport and 20% Duty Plus 7% VAT Puts Thailand Back Ahead on 5 of the 6

Personal effects enter Thailand duty-free only up to a combined value of THB 20,000. Every bag here clears that ceiling, which means the red channel, import duty at the 20% handbag rate, and 7% VAT charged on the duty-inclusive value. Together that adds 28.4% to whatever was paid abroad.

Read across and the answer flips twice. The tourist refund pushes all 6 onto the Japanese side, then Thai import duty pulls 5 of them back. CHANEL, which had the widest swing, ends up the bag where the Thai tag wins by the largest margin, THB 63,297.

When Luxe Addict compared Bottega Veneta Andiamo prices in March 2026, the rate in use was around 0.201 baht to the yen. Today it sits at 0.2134, a yen roughly 6% stronger in under a year. The same money buys fewer yen, and a gap that once looked worth the trip narrows without a single price tag moving.

For anyone planning a shopping trip, that is the reason to recalculate the gap before flying rather than trusting a figure from a post several months old. Exchange rates and retail tags move on entirely separate schedules.

If There Is No Japan Trip Planned Already, Is It Worth Flying Out to Buy?

No. The largest post-duty gap here is THB 237, which does not cover a one-way fare. With a trip already booked, though, buying there still has the edge on colour and stock, particularly for suede, which is produced in seasonal colour runs and sells through faster than smooth leather.
